6.18 NIS per liter(1/4 of a gallon) of unleaded here in our full-service-for-self-serve-price(prices range within a few Agorot, i.e nothing real though the advertize it like crazy), IDK what it means in USD except it's undoubtablly more expensive.
Of course it'll update in a week when the new month begins(somehow it goes down only at the start of the month, but if it rises more than a bit I bet they change it no matter the date).

According to the currency converter function built into the Mac Calculator app ( ), rates updated this morning, 1 NIS (I love that you still use sheqels, btw) is $0.26, so that's about $1.62 a liter or $6.13 per gallon.
FWIW.
FWIW.

Less than a quid a litre here now
I'm glad I didn't see this when you posted it - would have gone on a right rant.. We still use miles and imperial units are pretty common in the UK - but have adopted the metric system and SI units along with the EU and every other country ... Except the USA, Burma and Liberia. As it is you get some really dumb made-up units - like kg/sq-foot for pressure... makes you need a 568ml.Phaedrus wrote:Nope, we're the only ones still stuck in the stone age.SimonH wrote:Is there any countries except for the US and the UK that still use "imperial" units?

Huh? It's been in use for, what, 30-35 years tops now(first with the originals, then in the mid 80's I believe there was a big inflation so they made "new sheqels")? What's so special about it, coming from an american using centuries-old dollars(ok, ~230)?SandChigger wrote:(I love that you still use sheqels, btw)
It's a refrence to the bible, when Abraham bought that place to bury Sarah in(whatever the name for it in English is) he paid 30 silver sheqels.
I think that's the earliest refrence to currency in the bible, or I could be wrong.
Also, the root SH-K*-L is for wieghts etc, as those 40 sheqels were wighed.
*I think Koof is better represented by K than by Q, but whatever you want to use I guess.

I really meant that I thought it was cool that the name of your money goes back 5,000 years.

Well then, you should've said the part about the 5000(really that long? do you actually believe the dates in the bible?) years. Hlow am I supposed to know you actually remember that part of the bible?
You could've saved me the backstory, too.
And for the record, the first currency used, up until the old sheqels came, was named Lira, like some of the neighboring countries use(Egypt?).
IIRC it was mostly a continuation of the old currency's name under the British rule(and Otoman?).
On a related note, what's the oldest currency system(i.e same names, relatively unchanged system, like 100 cents=1 dollar etc) still in use today?

The primary cause of the recent drop was the pull-out of the speculators from the market (who had driven the price artificially high) a few weeks ago in anticipation of the nationalization of American banks and the impending economic collapse.
The drop in price has taken away a powerful talking point of the Democrats in the federal election. Republicans will gain politically, but the drop has nothing to do with the election except timing.

Yeah, the name is older but it obviously doesn't refer to the same thing (a particular weight) in the modern currency. The first mention in the Torah is the aforementioned Avraham, which represents a time between 3,685-3,848 years ago, so not quite 4,000 years.
I am not sure how much further prior to that it's use extends, but I'm sure it was somewhat common by then. Obviously it's not continous either. The last significant attempt prior to its modern useage to mint and use sheqels was probably 135 CE.

try not to take a beating on winter heating oil for the northeast.
But right now, a few days before the election, Democrats cannot stand
on the street corner and shout "High gas prices !" This would in fact
emphasize the drop, which a good Republican operative could twist to
take credit for. So as a debate issue, right now I think domestic gas
is off the table.
Back to how the Adminstration is losing two wars .....
