Julian May is one of my favorite authors and I'm on her yahoo discussion group, Julian-May-discuss@yahoogroups.com

Someone there mentioned that she wrote the first SF story with an ecological theme, Dune Roller, and it was published first in John Campbell's Astounding in 1950.

Has anyone read this short story?

It would be an incredible coincidence to me if she had been an influence on FH.

Here are the contents of that issue of Astounding. Apparently she did some interior artwork for the story (J. C. May is one of her pseudonyms).

Take a look at the first link. You can probably find some of those anthologies on Amazon in the used dealer market for pennies. It should be easy to find at least one, then you can get it and see what the story is about. If you dont want to buy go to WorldCat and see if any libraries in your area have it, or are willing to do interlibrary loan with the one nearest you.

It looks like the story was also filmed as an episode of an anthology show called Tales of Tomorrow. Here is a cut link, but maybe you can find it elsewhere.

Fantastic Fiction says it was her first published story, and calls it "fantastic." Other write ups say it was about a giant creature that ate people and animals on a sand dune, but note that it rolled up out of the water first. Sounds kind of like it could have influenced FH.

It may be in here somewhere, but since its so old and only ever got into reprint anthologies, I doubt it.
