1978 Dune Calendar

This is very close to how I pictured Dune in my head:

Image

Image
Dawn at the Palace of Arrakeen.

"The name, Arrakeen, had a good sound, filled with tradition. The arched ceilings stood two stories . . . with great crossbeams shipped . . . across space at huge cost . . . . And this was a smaller city, easier . . . to defend."

"Arrakis-Dune-Desert Planet. A wasteland where nothing lives except the spice and sandworms . . . Arrakis has special problems . . . . Storms build up across six or seven thousand kilometers of flatlands . . . blow up to seven hundred kilometers an hour . . . the pressures of thirst all around you . . . . Shelter means a hollow out of the wind and hidden from view . . . . The spice . . . is unique . . . it cannot be made . . . it must be mined on Arrakis."
Image
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

"The Baron was grossly and immensely fat . . . . All the fat was sustained by portable suspensors harnessed to his flesh . . . his feet wouldn't carry more than fifty . . . of his two hundred kilos."

"A basso voice rumbled. 'The biggest mantrap in history. Is it not a great thing that I, the Baron, do?'"

Image
The Sardaukar warriors.

"The Sardaukar . . . soldier fanatics . . . tough, strong, ferocious men . . . from the Emperor's prison planet. Sardaukar do not submit . . . they carry coils of shigawire in their hair . . . strong enough to garrote a man."
Image

Image

Image
The flight through the Shield Wall.

"A roll of ball lightning bounced away from the wall . . . . 'The shield . . . is down!' . . . 'thopters dived out of the night . . . in a hissing wedge . . . . And it was to the Arrakeen governor's mansion, the old Residency . . . that they escorted Paul Muad'Dib on the evening of his victory."
Image

Image
Paul Muad'Dib calling his first sandworm.

"Across the sand, a giant worm-a maker-would hear and come to the thumper's drumming. When it came from the southeast . . . Paul realized he had never seen a maker this large . . . he waited on the sand outside its line of approach . . . . The wild maker . . . loomed almost on him . . . the wave lifted his feet . . . he steadied himself . . . lifted his hooks, sighted along them, leaned in. He felt them bite and pull . . . . Paul found himself riding upright atop the worm. He felt exultant, like an emperor surveying his world . . . . He spoke to Stilgar. 'Then, I am a sandrider, Stil?' 'You are a sandrider this day,' replied Stilgar."
Image
Stilgar and his men.

"A tall man in a mottled burnoose stepped in front of Jessica. His mouth baffle was thrown aside for clear speech, revealing a heavy beard . . . but face and eyes . . . hidden in the overhang of his hood. 'If you're fugitives from Harkonnens,' he said, 'you're welcome with us. I am Stilgar, the Fremen.' "
Image
Paul administers the oath of the Fedaykin.
Image
The defeat of the Sardaukar.

"A silver-gray curve broached the desert, sending rivers of sand and dust cascading all around. It lifted higher, resolved into a giant questing mouth . . . some eighty meters in diameter . . . crystal teeth with the curved shape of crysknives glinting around the rim . . . the bellows breath of cinnamon, subtle aldehydes . . . acids."

That John Schoenherr stuff really captures the feel of Dune. Love that stuff.

(Egads! Numbers. I'll have to work up a 1, a 9, a 7 and an 8 for the Dune Font :D)

You can get all of those illustrations cheaper by buying either The Illustrated Dune or the Easton Press edition of Dune. All of them are in there.

Still, that calendar would be nice to have. I'm sure the prints are much larger in it, no?

(My birthday is in September ;) )

Some of those pics were artwork for the original serial publication of Dune. Others were done for the illustrated version. Some were done on spec for the movie. The calendar was an afterthought, IIRC.

My copy of the Illustrated Dune only has a few of those pictures, not all.

I've been hunting for a copy of that calendar on Ebay for over a year now, Schoenherr is by far my favorite Dune artist (and the original one). Like Freak says, I want the calendar so that I have bigger copies. I'd also love to get prints made of some of those to frame and hang in my house. :D

I have added text descriptions that were written by FH for a pictorial in Omni Magazine.

I believe the images without text are of (in order of appearance):

Paul and Jessica hiding in the rocks

The entrance to Sietch Tabr

[Dedication of the Shrine of the Skull]

Paul and Jessica's crossing

[edited to add skull shrine  ]

I forgot to mention the shrine scene, which ironically was not in the book, it was only a memory of a vision of Paul's.

I've ordered the Illustrated Dune from one of those second-hand sellers on Amazon. It was only £6.oo including postage from some hick place in the US I've never heard of. I'm surprised it was so cheap, half the pages are probably missing.
