Real life comparisons

I’m feeling some nostalgia right now. This post is something of a revival of my very first Dune post on the dunenovels forum back in November of 2006.

The post was called The world is Dune. It was deleted by auto-pruning.

I pointed out how I see the Dune Universe everywhere. I pointed out that I related Dune planets to real life places and many other parallels to things in the real world.

I can recall some:

I said that the Boeing and Airbus companies are the Spacing Guild.

Arrakis is the Middle East where oil can be found which is the spice.

I could not make a real life paralel to Caladan.

I compared the Island of Java with Geidi Prime.

Now I’m sure Frank Herbert really based the Fremen on the real life Arab Bedouin. Not sure if the precious comodity of spice melange was the Dune equivalent petroleum. But I’m very sure the character Paul Muad’Dib was based on a real life person. Probably Lawrence of Arabia but also John F. Kennedy (Brian Herbert suggested it) and maybe a prophet or messiah like Muhammad or Jesus.

So some comparisons were definitely what Frank Herbert intended. The rest just came from my imagination. Back then I was a bigger fan of the Dune franchise. I liked to imagine myself in the Dune Universe because I found it more exiting than reality. It’s one reason why I wrote my fan fiction titled ‘The Stranger’. I really wanted to (and still do) travel to the Gulf states of UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain so I could see the real life Arrakis. But I lost this enthusiasm for the Dune Franchise after I read Sandworms of Dune.

Such a tragic loss to posteriority! Oh ... the humanness. :tissue2:

Actually, I think I remember that. You posted under your real name initially, right?

Yes, that was it. A very raw and honest series of posts followed.

Which left no doubt in anyone's mind that you were (are) a complete loon.

I read that he was a lot of fun at parties, especially weddings.

Well there's six people I could be referring to there, so take your pick on who I meant.

A lotta fun, unless you believe people just drank grape juice back then and the "wine" is a mistranslation/devilry.

Slick. I almost typed "seven", but I try to limit my distaste for people I don't directly know.

Continued breathing for twenty-some years?

Managed to have sex, with a woman, and got her with child?

Has yet to disappear completely up his own bum?

(Shall I stop before I get really warmed up? :P )

For some, it's easier to count the women they did NOT impregnate.

I applaude Nebby:

normally, I'm against all forms of censorship on this board ....

but ....

is there some setting that would stop him from starting threads ?

just let him respond to on-going discussions ?

he's not started anything worthwhile yet, just gives the Tick
a chance to bite, and I keep getting sucked into his inaneness
because I often don't look at the name of the OP when I click
"view new posts", I just go up the line .....

just sayin' ..... :hand:

This is the "nostalgic" thread, right?

He's started its clone over on DN.

Or would both be gholas....

What?!

If you are going to censor me in any way, at least have written rules I have broken. Besides, I think this post and the one about gholas and cloning are worthwhile since they do discuss things Dune.

I actually typed that out earlier today and thought to myself...nah, someone else will take care of it.
