Amp's WoD Notes

Note: These are my observations and complaints taken down while reading WoD. I tried to avoid minor nitpicks where possible and even included the things I felt they got right. (3 things, if i remember correctly.)
Winds of Dune Notes
Pg13 Guild Transport “pressed into service”
-armed jihad Transport (Jihad over 3 years?)
-Jessica “ignores Important messages”
Pg14 -Why pilgrims to Caladan?
-Wouldn’t they be more interested in his birthworld of Kaitain(sic)?
Pg15 -Jessica offers Water, Gurney reminds us that Fremen revere water.
-“Only water?” Frank would have used this through Jessica’s BG observation as a manner of judging the character
of the arrived priests. Fremen would revere the gift, especially from the Mother of Muad’dib. Narcissistic priests and
power-players would frown on the meger offering.
-Again FREMEN in imitation stillsuits
-“unruly” describes Fremen
Pg16 -Jessica apparently unaware of the Fremen attitude to blindness.
- 1 Month after Paul exits, she knows he’s blind but not that he will
honor the Fremen tradition of walking into the desert.
Pg17 -Jessica is aware that Paul is Blind, but not that Chani was pregnant…or dead
-27 DAYS-Jessica angry that she was not informed of any of this…
->Above ‘Jessica ignores important messages’<-
Pg18 -Gurney is unaware of the Fremen attitude toward blindness, but Jessica is.
-“We needed to make the proper arrangements and gather a party of appropriate importance. It was necessary
to obtain a sufficiently impressive Guild ship to bring this terrible news.”
-If it’s a Guild ship, and it’s pressed into service for the Jihad, why did it take a month to procure it, since you are
being completely inconsiderate of the passengers already on board?
Pg19 -Bronso has been active for 7 years.
Chapter 2
Pg20 -Gazehounds-> No mention of them in FH’s Dune to suggest they exist at this time.
-recap of everything Gurney did in KJA books.
-Still no mention of Gurney’s Earldom and title (appears later)
Pg22 -BG training has “rust-shut” Jessica’s emotions.
-No mention of Jessica being worried about the twin’s heritage…
-> Leto (II) is the male descendant of a KH and Ghanima is the daughter who carries the line<-
-Jessica would know and expect this!
Chapter 3
Pg 24 -Re-wording of the “beginning is a delicate time”:
“The beginning of a reign, or regency, is a fragile time. Alliances shift, and people circle like carrion birds,
hunting for the new leader’s weaknesses. Sycophants tell leaders what they wish to hear, not what they need to
hear. The beginning is a time for clarity and hard decisions, because those decisions set the tone for the entire reign.”
–St. Alia of the Knife.
-“Envoy from Shaddam arrived less than a month after Paul vanished”
Pg 25 -“It’s been a month… and the Landsraad has never moved quickly.
-“considering travel times…how did they get here?” (TRAVEL TIME IS INSTANT KEVIN barring loading times)
Pg28 Chani hasn’t been buried either at this point.
- (wouldn’t Paul at least take care of this before he walked into the desert?)
Chapter 4
Pg 31-32-Heighliner isn’t still a Jihad Transport, it carries passengers
-“Passengers? I had assumed this was a special military ship commandeered by the Quizarate.”
-“Now that the Jihad has been declared over, many of the military ships have been placed back into service as
passenger ships.”
-“we took the first available vessel after Regent Alia instructed me to bring you word of Muad’dib’s death. What other business can possible be so important? All those other people can wait.”
->Above “we had to wait for a suitable impressive Guild ship”<-
Pg 33 -Passengers in the common area are talking about the news of Paul’s death. How did they know if Jessica just
found out? Why isn’t Jessica surprised and angered? (Gurney’s spy network should be shot)
Pg 34 -‘Rapt Pupil’ isn’t the phrase ‘apt pupil’?
-Jessica and Gurney see a Way-kool steward distributing Bronso’s tract. Let’s not investigate it yet…right after
someone in the same bar was killed in a knife fight for arguing the same subject. Amazing Guild security…
Chap. 5
Pg 35 -Stilgar complains about being pushed and jostled by pilgrims.
-in DM Frank talks about people getting in the way of Fremen from the deep desert being found dead in alleyways.
Pg 35-36-RARE PLUS: Halfway-decent exploration of Stilgar’s feeling of loss. (replicated from CoD)
Pg 37-38-Quickly Ruined by Stilgar’s execution of Mohaim, which we are told was awesome. KJA apparently forgets
that Paul trained the Fedayken to resist voice, instead he has Stilgar gag Mohaim.
Chap 6.
Pg 42. -Apparently the VIP landing pad is in the middle of a huge crowd at the public landing port.
-Senator Amidala almost assassinated on the landing pad by explosion.
-Crowd is awed by the moisture in the blood spread by the explosion.
Pg 43 -“it was troublemakers to whom any target would suffice.” In other words, we needed a grand entrance…to build
tension, oooooo.
Pg44 -Ha Ha Ha Duncan was drunk once… Alia described as a “teenager”
Chap 7
Pg 45 -Leto and Ghanima “would never know their father…just political pawns.” (Jessica’s thoughts.)
-Alia suggests that Ghanima was named in honor of Harah, not for the fact that she was gained from losing his
wife to childbirth and politics.
Pg 48 -Jessica doesn’t know her parentage (OM much KJA? She knows the Baron is her father.)
-Goes right up to the door of why Ghani was named Ghani and doesn’t knock.
- Jessica knows about Tessia and how the BG treated her.
Chapter 8
Pg49 -Irulan (KJA?) defiant about being labeled a hack, claims to write only truth, will be celebrated 1000 years after
(from a draft manuscript of The Legacy of Muad’dib”)
-“I write what is true about Muad’dib, or what should be true. Some critics accuse me of distorting the facts and
writing shameless misinformation…Let these critics return in a thousand years and look at history; then see if they
dismiss my work as propaganda”
Pg 50 -Muadru sign! Jessica lets Irulan out of Death Cell Prison. Alia I guess doesn’t care that she ‘reeks of
trustworthyness!’
Pg51 -Fremen Guard makes warding sign against evil when Jessica orders him to release Irulan?
Chap 9 (I stopped counting chapter breaks after this one)
Pg 55 -Duncan rambles about things that never happened (Young Paul episode from Paul of Dune)
-Duncan is flying a lone ornithopter over the sands “high enough to not disturb worms”, YET in Paul of Dune, a
shielded Ornithopter over the desert wasn’t considered dangerous. Is it maybe because they read our comments that
they try now to cover them?
-10,000 ships arrive for the funeral…yet they had to wait 1 month for the first transport earlier
Pg 56 -Arrakis has planetary Ion Cannons to defend against Star Destroyers attacking Hoth. OMG COOL HEY KEV ITS
DUNE NOT STAR WARS.
Pg 66 -Bronso is so ninja-leet he hid a projector in Paul’s Funeral Urn with no one knowing and sneaks in a flight of
Ornithopters to fly over spraying out clouds of… fog. BRONSO OF IX’s face appears above the crowd and tells them not
to follow “circus shams”. (THIS INCIDENT BECOMES IRONICALLY IMPORTANT LATER AND NOT JUST IN THE OMG CIRCUS FORESHADOWING.)
Pg 77 -Tupile Alliance asks for Landsraad representation. KJA doesn’t know what the fuck Tupile is obviously. He thinks
Paul gave them amnesty and the right to return. NO, HE PROMISED NOT TO SEEK TUPILE SO IT WOULD REMAIN A
HIDDEN SANCTUARY FOR EXILED HOUSES.
Pg 78 -Alia is changing the Great Convention against Atomics and ordering every house to turn them over to her.
Reason is “no outside enemy for over 10,000 years”. If he means Omnius, that wasn’t an ‘outside enemy’. I have the
sinking sensation he means the “Muadru”.
-Jessica defends Alia’s move since Fremen conspiracy blinded Paul with atomic Stone Burner.
-Yet in COD, Duncan worries that having all of the Atreides on Dune makes them vulnerable to attack from space
with atomics. It isn’t until GEOD that Leto II seeks out all of the Great Houses atomics and confiscates them.
-Not to mention that the Landsraad would probably consider any attempt to confiscate the atomic weapons from the
Houses as a violation of the Great Convention and react accordingly.
-Lots of throwing around of the word “Tyrant”. I think KJA thinks that Paul was “The Tyrant”. We’ll see when
LETO OF DUNE comes out ON TIME in 2013!!!
-Jessica is clumsy. More foreshadowing?
Pg 81 -Still no Imperial landing pads for women. Jessica and Alia use disguises to get the spaceport.
Pg 82 -Admission of Alia’s OM.
Pg 83 -Use of Fremen name for a wind. So, that’s why it’s called winds! How culturally clever they are!
Pg 84 -“I know what you are thinking. I know what you are doing. Most of all, I know what I am doing.”
–St. Alia of the Knife.
-UNPREDICTABILITY! It’s the ultimate tool of state craft for tee hee heenage Crazy Queens: Unpredictability
trumps plans within plans within plans as well as being a great excuse for sloppy writing and plotting.
-2 weeks after Paul’s Funeral: I might be wrong on this, but isn’t it bad form and against protocol for a Regent to sit in the throne?
Pg 85 Alia does the spice trance to go into OM, not for Prescience.
Pg 85-86-OM RM Mohaim suggests using fear to manipulate Ix. Because she is a Bad Guy TM
Pg 86 -Workers prefer to toil to serve Alia rather than use suspensors to move Paul’s Emerald Throne.
-Worker slaps a bee on the throne, Alia slices his hand open because she is crazy, er unpredictable.
Pg 87 -Alia wears water rings in her hair to show she is Fremen. Iirc, water rings in hair is a Fremen sign of betrothal/marriage.
Pg 88 -magic awesome technology makes cool shit happen. Alia says “bring me toys”.
g 90 -Bronso is hiding with the Way-kool on Guild ships. No way, he’s hiding with friends?
-The Way-kool support Bronso secretly. Yet Jessica saw them distributing Bronso’s flyers on page 34.
Don’t worry, they will mention this on page 376.
-Guild is unaware that Bronso uses their ships to get around...
-Bronso “hides” in penthouse suites occasionally with the aid of Way-kool staff.
Pg 91 -Bronso is “the only man brave enough to criticize Muad’dib openly” From Dune Messiah (CHAPTER 1 LINE 1):
“Muad’dib’s Imperial reign generated more historians than any other era in human history.”
-Way-kool are ‘ignored’ by the Guild and the Imperium.
-Way-kool hide tracts on passengers and in luggage. No one is smart enough to figure out that they are
appearing on GUILD SHIPS for 300 more pages.
-Bronso: (paraphrasing page 91) Paul allowed, allowed! His government to be tyrannical but Paul was a good guy
and tried to stop it…When he wasn’t being a tyrant!!! But he was a good man who happened to be evil. (KJA and Brian
seesaw in this issue for the entire book.)
-More about how historians are liars, we need Indiana Bronso to be a good historian and not bullshit people.
Bronso will correct the mistakes in the record because other historians are WRONG.
-Bronso is sensitive and doesn’t like beating up on his good buddy Paul. Who he hates.
Pg 93 -Alia is shipping copies of a “better” “revised” edition of Irulan’s book.
Pg 94 -workers now use suspensors, not worth toiling for crazy Alia.
-Duncan is Alia’s bitch. He’s so pussy-whipped it isn’t funny.
-Irulan’s “Official histories will easily overwhelm Bronso’s lies by brute force if necessary.” Unless Brian is now
secretly an OH, this is massive irony, no?
Pg 94-95-Irulan isn’t a coward, but she’ll whore for Alia.
Pg 95 -Irulan is writing on Ridulian crystal sheets with a pen. /facepalm KJA proves he doesn’t know anything about publishing or wtf a printing press is. Or Crystals. Or Pens.
Pg 95 -“The new revisions to the Life of Muad’dib are disturbing…even starry-eyed pilgrims can see your obvious slant…” IS THIS WHOLE BOOK ABOUT THE OH WAR?
Pg 96 -‘the slant provides balance…Bronso’s constant unflattering revelations are doing damage”
-OMG NO WAY Paul and Bronso were friends once… No, really, they weren’t:
-Dune: Paul had no friends his own age. Paul’s first trip off planet was to Arrakis
-Paul was trained by Thufir Hawat from a young age to be a Mentat. This required a special regimen of training
much different from the regular institutions. He would not be sent off to school somewhere unless it was to a Mentat
School.
YOUNG INDIANA BRONSO SECTION I
Pg 99 -Brady Family Intro: (Paraphrasing) Jessica “As for me, I’cant wait to talk to other women about girl stuff”;
Paul: “Yippee!”
-Apparently Great Houses see no need to have private landing fields, open public ones are safe enough… No
escorts either.
Pg 101-Apparently the Planetary ruler can skip political councils to meet friends. And he wonders why he’s losing power.
-Rhombur mentions multiple assassination attempts but assures everyone’s safety. He knows it’s the Ixian
Council, but for some reason can’t stop them.
Pg 104-Paul has no dedicated tutor (except Duncan, Gurney, Hawat…)No mention of Mentat Studies.
Pg 105-Oh: “Paul has no playmates his own age ON CALADAN”
Pg 106-110 –Everyone reiterates how much they wuv each other.
- BG are either Bitches or Heretics.
Pg 115-BG learned tricks from Jongleurs. BG have Psychic Powers.
-Rhombur must use the term “Vermillion Hells!” in EVERY SENTENCE. I’m hoping that KJA means the color (reddish)
rather than a number, since Vermillion is a color. However, seeing as how Rhomber uses this in just about every
sentence, I’m assuming that KJA equates it with a numerical meaning.
