oh hay gril
Hey yall. How's it going? My name's Amanda. I'm 23, live in California and I'm engaged. Kind of obsessed with all things sci-fi and I'm a philosophy student, so all things Nietzsche at the moment.
My first copy of Dune was one I stole from my high school when I as 16 and ever since I've been trying to collect as many old copies as possible of the first four novels. I haven't read Chaperhouse or Heretics yet, and I will not ever invest any time in those "books" written by Brian Herbert and "worst Star Wars book ever" writer KJA.
I actually watched the Lynch movie entirely in one sitting for the first time last night. It was hard to not laugh and walk away a hundred times. Needless to say the Sci-Fi channel (SyFy ) mini series is my definitive Dune. I hate the sets and the costumes as much as anyone else, but those actors are who I see when I read the books every couple of months. The Children of Dune mini was pretty rockin', but could have been much better.
I suppose I've floated around the Dune online community in one way or another for a while but since DoD died I didn't really care to invest in a new community, until now. Anyway, this place seems pretty alright and Dune is the best so I'm excited to talk about it. Plus you guys can help me create my Philosophy of Dune class for when I'm a big bad college professor. <-- lol at that

Hello and welcome. Hope you enjoy it around here. Most of the guys are mostly harmless. Nice to have another female around here. Look forward to getting to know you better.

She says that to almost all of the new people here, but never actually specifies who she means...Eyes High wrote:Most of the guys are mostly harmless.

Hey, half the fun is in finding out who.

Thanks for all the welcomes! Nice to see the board is active.
I'm definitely going to jump into Heretics and Chapterhouse pretty soon after I finish reading Dune for the 10 millionth time. This is actually the first time I've read Dune in a year maybe since I read Herbert's Pandora series twice through all 4 books. Freaking amazing. Man, I should get some other books.

books are good
Frank Herbert's are even better
Welcome²
Nice to have a philosophist's point of view on Dune, I'm sure it must be riddled with references and I/we look forward to unearth them

Welcome - from a fellow Dune-enthusiast and philosopher.
Incidentally, there is some layman's stuff coming out at some point (the call for papers has ended, I am afraid):
http://prosblogion.ektopos.com/archives ... /dune.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So, twice welcome, and let me know if I can ever help out on any "Philosophy and Dune" subject. I hope I still remember enough...
Personally, I have read so much Neal Stephenson and stuff about nuclear bombs, that my focus is "philosophy and science fiction". So with Star Trek communicators in every teens pocket, and a global network enbling the sharing all culture and knowledge - I have my hands full

Welcome. Enjoy Heretics and Chapterhouse, preferably in that order.
I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert
