See, now if James Cameron had spent 300 million dollars to make those pics into a 3 hour 3d epic DUNE, then I would go get my "eyeballs fucked".

Unless of course he decided to cheese up the story, wich in that case i wouldnt want to see it.

Re: PROJECT SAND
Well, Americans love their dairy products, and Dune these days is only about the milkin', so a cheesy remake would be about right.
I really like the art on this site; thanks for posting the link, 13athroom!
This one is purdy, but...
... a bit too much artistic license with the moons. (The lighting & shadows are completely wrong. )

Nicely styled work, the sense of scale in some of the pics featuring Worms is very impressive. As mentioned already this is a fair helping of artistic licence going on but wtf, really.

Re: PROJECT SAND
Fantastic work, with the formentioned
Artistic license. Makes the artist inside..fighting to get out want to cry. I have no talent even near that, but have those type of visages inside my head (as I'm sure you do).
I have often wondered if FH ever thought of haveing a stills artist alongside him, to capture those creation moments as he wrote at the same time on canvas. Dune might have been. 1000 pages, but it would have only enhanced it. I know he wanted to leave it up to the readers mind and imagination, but to me, Dune (all six books) SCREAMS to be visually represented. I don't know why I feel like that I just do. Every image I see, be it movies, cut sceen shots, artwork etc... Just makes that wanting deeper.
Will savor these... And hope I guess.

Re: PROJECT SAND
Dune is a fantastic universe to draw stuff in - Although sometimes it can a bit infuriating because FH was just so vague :p
I love these 'thopters though -
All the film guys who try to tackle thopters always say the concept doesn't work on screen (ie: why we had the flying-iron and the fan-flap-things). That pic is proof it would work, and look amazing

They're great. Those pictures pretty much capture how Dune looked in my mind when reading the books, far more than Lynch's film or the mini series.

I really love the orange 'thopter in this one, too:
Kind of a cross between a helicopter and a mosquito. I always thought of 'thopter wings as being bird-like, but having them be *insect*-like really works, IMHO.

I'm still very proud of The Quarry but … let's face it; in the end the real best way to sign off would have been with a great big rollicking Culture novel.

I've always pictured 'thopters as dragonflies.
Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

Re: PROJECT SAND
Recently I have pictured them in my heads as bigger birds; raptors and the like. Think about it, with so much open desert on Arrakis the winds must move ferociously, and the heat coming off of that desert probably provides enough lift for something pretty big. In strong winds like that I would imagine that they have to be kind of bulky or they would get blown apart. Given the major thermals that are probably coming off the desert, lift probably is not a huge problem. Plus, it must be pretty bad ass to see one diving at you like a hawk going for a mouse.Freakzilla wrote:I've always pictured 'thopters as dragonflies.

Re: PROJECT SAND
didn't the Atreides bring the thopters with them from Caladan ?
were they in wide use thru out the Empire ?
or an Atreides specialty ?
point is, I don't think they were designed on Arrakis or only for use on Arrakis.
or were they ?
the uplift aspect is a good point, tho;
hadn't thought of that... flap-flap-flap up a ways,
catch a thermal, soar around like a glider, flap-flap-flap for a landing.
(not the way hummingbirds fly atall, BTW ...)

Do they have jets as well? Or is that a prequel travesty?

Re: PROJECT SAND
FH mentions jets iirc.
I always interpreted that as a booster for short runway take-off or when things started to go wrong. - The real manned ornithopter they built needed a small jet to reach take-off speed.

Yes, I just read a passage from CoD where Idaho is "abducting" Jessica, and there are jets on the thopter.

Did Leto II hit an afterburner or anything like that to escape the worm in his Ornithopter?
