if this fucker eats my new (just repaired) desktop,
I'll take that as a Sign from the Baby Jesus, repent,
and forsake the internet (as my pastor has been advising

How can a place where goatse is considered tame be evil? Clearly it is so infinitely sinful that it loops all the way around into heavenly.

Don't you dare give up the Internet. :angry-tappingfoot: Well maybe just a few sites, but you best not give us another scare like you did a few weeks ago.

:angry-devil: Don't make me come over to Texas to try to find your swearing, sinful, beer soaked, lustful.... where was I going with this?

Oh yeah. You best stick around here. After all, You've got to give me a chance to convert you, you sinful heathen. Or was that you've got to have a chance to teach me the way of the OH?

Well either way...Let us know how the upgrade goes.

well, I was really hoping to have something to bitch about, but ....

pretty painless, took less than 2 hours, most of that was automated,
all data and programs seem okay, Seven looks & acts like Vista, which
I was comfortable with.

the idea that the Windows Mail (formerly Outlook Express) & the Photo Gallery
& some other multimedia things aren't included in 7 but available for free
for download makes some sense - they plan to put out updates for those
apps separate from the OS. only knock there is that I do have to download
MS apps over dial-up. (I like their photo gallery, with the "fix" button,
that's all the photo-editing I need)

so, in a word, this bullshit worked just fine.

and that's just bullshit.

gimme a few days, I'll find somethin wrong with this sumbitch ...

only real problem so far is with anti-virus + vista-to-7-upgrade + dial-up ....

spent all afternoon finding a basic anti-virus that won't randomly terminate my connection ...

the whiz-kids @my local ISP say this is an "issue" they've being hearing alot about ....

overall tho, 7 seems to be considerably faster than Vista and they seem to have fixed the "search" function,
as in the Vista search (the old "find") didn't fucking work at all - seriously, you could create a simple text file,
name it "Text.txt" and save it all the place and the "search" would return all kinds of crazy, non-related shit,
none of which was "Text.txt".

aww shit, this a debacle, now.

I been messing with it for awhile - right now, I have no anti-virus installed whatsoever,
the Windows Defender and Firewall turned off, and the User Account Control disabled -
this is the only way I can get past my ISP's server and onto the net - so I'm barebacking
it right now, you Russian Commie Basterds keep your filthy data-sucking bots off my machine ...

it's a combination of all of the above, I'm thinking now it just might be the UAC.

had enough for today, tho - gonna check-in here and go to a bluegrass festival.

again, for the Windoze-haters, this is only an issue for the Vista to Seven upgrade,
and only with going out on a dial-up. which just happens to be me .....

FTLOG, drop your malware magnate, firefox, and install Opera if your going to go bareback. I been surfing that way for years and never had a single virus, fact.

Over the years, I have never trusted an in place upgrade of windoze, I always get a fresh drive and planted it on that, then migrated my stuff to new drive. I would keep old drive boot partition for a year (in case of need to revert back, just unplug cable, plug back in reboot and back were I was before, minus any Updates) before calling it good. Always have multiple Widoze machines too, Business one (just sit's there for bills, general BS, nothing fancy) the second the trash/trick box, for gaming, multi media, and other activities, that way if it blows a tire, I still have main one in a pinch.

I understand being out where the broadband doesnt roam, or its cost prohibative, but dail-up and windows7 just seems like it would have issues,

I am using Windows 7 enterprise 64 bit edition at work on a new dell optiplez 745 (didnt have a choice, company upgraded when I started last month). Windows is Windows, and new version is pain like usual, shit is all over place, out of place, more bells and whistles than needed, and all this graphic add on is unnecessary. It isnt much faster than my windows XP sp 3 at home, and has about 100 times more CPU and resources. Office Enterprise is another bloated, everything out of place, mess too, FYI.

So guess MS is about par for course, same old same old, bahhhh.

Glad this worked out for ya. I wouldnt have pissed on Vista if it was running around on fire, second worst MS OS incarnation since Millinium edition.

After sp1 came out I never had any trouble with Vista... before that my PC crashed several times a day. I don't think it has crashed once since then. I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 7, cause I'm happy with Vista now.

I never use a new Windows OS until SP2.

I was desperate for a new computer, so I bought one a couple months before sp1 came out. I would have had to pay extra for one with XP, and I don't know enough about computers to build my own. I'm just glad I didn't buy one sooner than I did!

Hopefully this thread wont turn into I hate thisOS over that OS, but hey express yourself if ya want.

I am happy to see people have success with the evil spewed from redmond, if it works for ya great and hope it stays that way.

Freak, I can agree with that, similar feelings myself.
Mandy glad its working for ya
SR I hope W7 continues to work out.

over 20 years dealing with operating systems in my job, and its a joy to hear folks have success with ANY OF THEM, cause they all can be a PITA sometimes.

All of them are ridding the lip of the funnel with Unix at the bottom, so eventually it wont matter, you will just buy the device with AN OS, and access your data, programs, etc thru whichever environment (GUI, Prompt, 3D, Shell, Silly straw, etc) you want.
Whatever works for ya!!!

I dunno, some of XP's quirks are getting really old now.

The other day it did it's thing where after installing updates you have to click "Restart Later" every 5 mins or else it automatically restarts - which can be really annoying if you've left the computer alone in the middle of doing something crazy like uploading something to FTP, copying files, burning a DVD or if you've just left an unsaved document open

All of which have happened

Indeed. I've only used XP my entire life until my new laptop with 7, so I just thought that's all there was. It's strange to have a weight lifted that you never knew was there in the first place.

Same goes for IE before I switched to Firefox.

No kidding, the entire pro and home recording industries completely ignored Vista and just kept making products for XP, hopefully we can keep it going!

death, taxes, Windows upgrades ....

still having serious issues with 7 & Dial-up - now appears to be the Windows Defender that don't like it ...

seems like I'm the lead researcher for my local ISP, too - fucking kids.
they've been really good to me up til now, but they don't have experiance
yet and there's really not a whole of us dial-up users on their server now, anyway ....

anyway, this is the first time in two days I've been able to get past my local server -
gonna go browse all the windows-geek forums and look for a solution -

I have a state-of-the-art machine, with the newest and totally updated Windows OS,
all updated drivers from the OEM, and I can't get on the net ? WTF ?

I've been a casual windows user since DOS 5, if you want to look at it that way; IBM PCs,
MS-DOS, Windows 3.11 and etc. Got real good with 98SE at the time, was using it for
work - didn't really get into the serious web stuff until, well, 2008. And I've said this before,
I've still got bootable machines with 98SE, one 95, and a 386 that dual-boots DOS6 & Win3.
Electronically, they still work great.

and let's be clear here, 7 is not a new OS - it's the next Vista (6), which was the next 5, (Windows 2000),
which was the NT4 upgrade ....XP was the last of the Win95 kernels .... na-na/na-na-na/hey-hey-hey &etc.

love yer XP if ya want, it's deader than DOS ...

My biggest beef with Vista was the endless difficulty I seemed to have running "old" apps - some released as recently as two years prior to the release of Vista - with little or no solutions forthcoming from either microsoft or the software manufacturer. :angry-steamingears:

If 7 fixes that, then I'll upgrade. Otherwise, I'm sticking with XP, dead or not :).

anybody else using Seven yet ?

I'm happy enough - the "upgrade" from Vista mostly seem to be cosmetic, but cool & useful cosmetic,
for the most part - there is still a major issue with the dial-up connection, which none of the Windoze
forums I've looked at are dealing with - I think it's just an issue with the modem driver - one out of three
reboots and the modem will connect to my local server and then not be able to go out on the net.

I think the Windows7 + Firefox + dial-up is a winner (when it works) - certainly seems to load
pages much quicker than Vista+IE8 (when it works)

If theres any problems with it, warn us. I would hate to think they went through all that effort to make up for the vista fiasco only to fail epicly all over again.

I never had any non-typical new-windows problems with vista I hadn't encountered before -
especially after the SP2 - but for fun, goto any Windoze forums and ask why the version/build
on "Windows 7" is 6.1/7600
