Dune Trivia

Dune Trivia returns victoriously from the ashes of another dead forum!

I believe it's Master B's turn, but I'm not sure, and I'm not going back to Arrakeen to check. Someone with a better memory might correct me if I'm wrong?

(A note to the administration: there really isn't a horribly appropriate place for this thread on the board right now. If/When a more appropriate forum exists, please feel free to move this thread to that place, thanks)

I'll start us off with an easy one.

What's the difference between a ghola and a clone?

Posted: 09 Feb 2008 19:47
by Simon
a clone is grown from cell samples (skin samples, finger nail clippings etc..)

a ghola is a restored cadaver (mortal wounds repaired after insertion into axlotl tank)

I may need a refresher here but wouldn't Duncan from GEoD on be considered a clone? What I mean is that even if the Duncan who is crushed by LetoII at the beginning of GEoD was the "original" body (which is never specified one way or the next) wouldn't the Duncan featured prominently in GEoD be considered a clone (as he was definitly not the cadaver of "old" Duncan, who was already angry because of the discovery that his replacement was in the works.)

This is basically right, but I was going to add that it seems to depend on what time frame you are asking about.

Simon's correct. The GEoD Duncans were technically clones, Hayt was the only ghola.

Can we limit Dune trivia to the original series please?

Hey! New Dune is the only prayer I have of stumping you guys!

I was trying to come up with something trivial from Sandworms to ensure I'd hobbled you appropriately Freak  but I figured that was below the belt. That was why I choose something related to the classics and from a book I know you'd read (though not to many times  )

I havent read Sandworms and won't. We'll see what the rest of the members think about questions from the new books...

I read this guys name earlier today. Its in KJA's answers to the interview Chig sent him, but Ill be damned if I can remember it right now. Is that on his blog somewhere?

Let me try something classic.... (you guys are going to get this so quick...)

Who killed the last "official" Corrino?

(official being of Shaddam descent or non-Ferradin/Ghani descent, outside of LetoII's breeding program)

Um...I'm still not sure what you mean by "last 'official' Corrino".

Leto ordered Duncan to kill a Corrino as a test in GEoD. But I don't think there was any mention of him being the last of his line, other than his being referred to as "THE Corrino".

(The other answer was Chobyn, I believe. But if we're allowing in fanfic, The Dune Encyclopedia should get equal time, too. ;) )

Damn! I was pretty sure it was the last guy with legal claim to the name.
But yeah, you got what I was getting at.

Both of 'em

I think he was the last Corrino mentioned other than BG decendants.

Like Odrade. ;)

Wait, what?

I thought the difference is that a ghola is simply a clone of a dead person.
Tamalane frowned. She had disagreed from the first with calling this child a ghola. Gholas were grown from cells of a cadaver. This was a clone, just as Scytale was a clone.
This is in reference to the Miles Teg ghola(clone?) in Chapterhouse.

Duncan Idaho, his original cells being from the dead bodies of Duncan Idaho and his gholas, is a ghola, whereas Teg is a clone, because the cells were taken from his living body.

AH! Right you are! :) The difference is that Ghola's have a death memory and clones don't.

That is why I said what I did. At first, it seemed to be a reanimated corpse. Later on, it was a clone from dead tissue. Either the technology changed, or FH forgot what the hell he was writing about.

by Freakzilla
Either way, a ghola is grown from a corpse, a clone is from the living.

I don't think FH screwed up but the technology improved regarding how much dead tissue was required.

I guess in that respect I was wrong about the GEoD Duncans, since they were from the cells of the original... dead... Duncan.

Y'all will have to forgive me, I've been on a lot of cold medicine for a week.

:(

Never! The cold is the excuse, the drugs are a treatment.

I've given up on the Robitussin and switched to Bourbon so things are getting back to normal.

:P

(I'm going to the DR. in the morning to get some good drugs.)
