Dune World — Analog, 1963-1964

I thought some folks here might be interested in seeing the first appearance of Dune — though, technically, it was known at the time as "Dune World."

As many of you know, Dune was serialized before it was put between covers by Chilton. The first part of the story — "Dune World" — appeared in three installments in Analog, beginning in December of 1963 and extending into the first two issues of 1964. At first glance, this appears to be nearly identical to the Dune novel that was eventually read by millions, although I have not attempted to do a line-by-line comparison. I can say that many of my favorite passages appear to be word-for-word identical so far (I'm currently reading these issues, trying to get a feel for what it must have been like to actually be experiencing these for the first time in the early '60s).

I've included some photos below. I apologize for the poor lighting; my house faces west, so I don't get good light until the late afternoon. From top to bottom, the photos are:

1. The December 1963 cover;

2. The splash page;

3. An interior illustration;

4. All three issues.

That is one fantastic trophy in your collection. Must have cost a small fortune. I have seen the three of them combined once for $400,00 on ebay.

I was able to but together the entire serialization of Dune for under $90 dollars, but it took time and had to be done piece meal. I'm a little disappointed with the format change on the last two issues. Sometime, I'd like to pick up the DM Galaxy run, and the CoD Analog run. ince I'll never be able to afford a true first edition, I'm happy to have these in my collection.

So Dukester, how are you protecting these?

Is that Paul hiding from the hunter-seeker? He looks...well...black. I could see the Atreides as being black. That gives me a casting idea! Samuel L. Jackson as Duke Leto! :lol:

So far, it really hasn't been that bad (I've also got some of the 1965 issues with the middle part of Dune, but I didn't bother photographing those).

I've tried to do a little research, use a bit of Google-Fu to find the more obscure booksellers, show a bit of patience, etc. These issues are out there; Analog was fairly well-known and had a decent print-run (relatively speaking, of course). It's just a bit of a game to try to get them under one roof for a reasonable price.

It is.

The illustrations are very dark, and my guess is that this one is supposed to represent night-time (or at least a dark room). Add the low level of light when I took the photos, and I think what you're seeing looks darker than it really is.

that is really, really nice, Duke.

I don't think I've ever seen the magazines - I remember the first time this hippie started talking
me to death about Dune in 65 ... he'd read this story in some flying saucer magazine ...

I'd like to see more photos, or a scan - Omph, what's the law on that kinda stuff ?
would it be cool with you if Duke scanned the whole thing and posted it in Frank's archive at T(A)U ?
(providing Duke will do that ... :pray: )

I love those Analog issues. I actually bought those off of Ebay four or five years ago. I don't have many collectibles, but those are one of the few things I've bought on Ebay.

Full scans would break the binding; sorry. On the other hand, trying to fake it to keep the binding intact would result in useless scans. It's a pickle.

Thank you for that link!!! I tremendously enjoyed those illustrations. I especially grooved on the one of young Paul and his prescience.
