gadgets, sex, and the violence, and left poor old George Smiley on the library shelf .... all of The Circus
books by La Carre are subtle, low-key, thought-provoking, beautiful, and historically accurate ... at the
very end of the "Hunt for Karla" trilogy, Smiley discovers a secret about the head of the opposing KGB
faction he's been butting heads with for years; Smiley subtlety threatens Karla with exposure, and the
final scene is George waiting in a coffee shop in West Berlin across from a checkpoint; a car clears
the gates from East Berlin, pulls up to the curb, and Karla gets out ... Smiley goes out and shakes
his hand, says he's "terribly sorry" about all this, and puts the KGB head into a sedan and drives
away .... it's Anti-Bond ...

I used to compare the Smiley/Bond thing with Dune/Star Wars .... one's the real deal and one's bullshit ....

I've read some Le Carré, a long time ago, but I honestly can't remember having read any of Fleming. If you had to suggest one of his books as characteristic, which would you choose?

I enjoyed On Her Majesty's Secret Service, right after Bond's wife dies. Which is why the only Bond movie I really enjoyed was the one with Lazenby (sp?).

Don't forget that it had Telly "Lollypops" Sevalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

If you can get it, watch The Ipcress File. A realistic anti-Bond spy film with Michael Caine.
