The stamp of strangeness

Everybody must remember that scene (especially now Simon beautifully illustrated it ).
I always thought of it as a cool expression that meant nothing and everything, but I'm beginning to wonder now.
I found this in Google books, I don't have time right now to investigate, maybe someone can enlighten me?
Here's what I'm on about.
(I'm not sure about the date though, I found a hard cover mentionned as 1966)
It reads like something out of Dune now doesn't it?
