Back on topic. I'm actually not a big fan of entries in timeliness that have the date as "??????" Seems kind of pointless to add these events if you don't have the time it occurred. A timeline without the time is, well, just a line I suppose :?

for my personal version of this, I will probably delete entries like:

???? B.G.
Following the Second Interspace Migrations, the Jews hide their identity from the non-Jews.
[Chapterhouse: Dune]

Since there is no time reference. But, as I stated before, give my thanks to Edric for doing the work on it!!
Thanks for the vote of approval, it very much welcome, and that goes for everyone, thanks for the input.

As for the entries with ????A.G.
They are there because I know roughly when an event happened but have no proof or sources to drawn on for evidence of an exact date. Also these events dated ???? often give context to entries with dates.

There is an area of the timeline I've been having difficulty with . . .

The period of time when Pardot became planetologist and the sequence of events that lead to the plan for transforming Arrakis, I'm finding hard to get dates. Any clues?

Your welcome.

IF got a question and I hope someone has the answer . . . How long is a generation measured? I think it's 20 years but I'm not sure, if it is I've got an entry to add . . .

Appr. 9800 A.G.
House Atreides is given Caladan, the third planet of the Delta Pavonis star system as a siridar-fief.

This is one we've gone around the bend a few times on before. In the Religion Appendix of Dune FH wrote
Then came the Butlerian Jihad—two generations of chaos. ... Those two generations of violence were a thalamic pause for all humankind.
and in the "Terminology":
JIHAD, BUTLERIAN: (see also Great Revolt)—the crusade against computers, thinking machines, and conscious robots begun in 201 B.G. and concluded in 108 B.G.
201 - 108 = 93 divided by 2 gives 46.5 years. The Atreides were on Caladan for 1209 years using this figure, or from 8982 A.G. (simply subtracting from 10191...or would you go back from Paul or Leto I's birthdate?).
Appr. 9800 A.G.
House Atreides is given Caladan, the third planet of the Delta Pavonis star system as a siridar-fief.
[Dune]
But then again, it isn't an exact science.

Re: Orthodox Herbertarian Dune Timeline

Posted: 06 Apr 2022 03:40
by DrunkenIdaho
There are still quite a few things missing as well as a few things that are wrong on this timeline.
  1. Frank Herbert in Dune Messiah wrote:"Tibana was an apologist for Socratic Christianity, probably a native of IV Anbus who lived between the eighth and ninth centuries before Corrino, likely in the second reign of Dalamak. Of his writings, only a portion survives from which this fragment is taken: “The hearts of all men dwell in the same wilderness.”
    —FROM THE DUNEBUK OF IRULAN"
  2. Frank Herbert in Terminology of the Imperium wrote:"ASSASSINS’ HANDBOOK: Third-century compilation of poisons commonly used in a War of Assassins. Later expanded to include those deadly devices permitted under the Guild Peace and Great Convention."
  3. Frank Herbert in Dune wrote:"Paul faced the old woman, holding anger in check. 'Does one dismiss the Lady Jessica as though she were a
serving wench?' A smile flicked the corners of the wrinkled old mouth. 'The Lady Jessica was my serving wench, lad, for fourteen years at school.' She nodded. 'And a good one, too. Now, you come here!'"
We know from Appendix IV that Jessica was born in 10154. Assuming her training started since she was born, then, it was therefore completed in 10168.
  4. Irulan was born in 10176, definitely not 10162.
Frank Herbert in Dune wrote:"My father, the Padishah Emperor, took me by the hand one day and I sensed in the ways my mother had taught me that he was disturbed. He led me down the Hall of Portraits to the ego-likeness of the Duke Leto Atreides. I marked the strong resemblance between them—my father and this man in the portrait—bothwith thin, elegant faces and sharp features dominated by cold eyes. 'Princess daughter,' my father said, 'I would that you’d been older when it came time for this man to choose a woman.' My father was 71 at the time and looking no older than the man in the portrait, and I was but 14, yet I remember deducing in that instant that my father secretly wished the Duke had been his son, and disliked the political necessities that made them enemies.
—'In my Father’s House' by Princess Irulan"
Although Appendix IV, the Almanak en-Ashraf (an in-universe document) claims Shaddam was born in 10134, we know he was actually born in 10119 because the opening paragraph claims that Paul was born in Shaddam's 57th year. The above quote is therefore describing an event of the year 10190, at the beginning of the original Dune novel. Irulan says she was 14, so she was born in 10176.
  5. Anirul also died in 10176, not 10175.
Frank Herbert in Appendix IV wrote:"SHADDAM IV (10,134-10,202)..()...His wife, Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank, died in 10,176."
  6. Frank Herbert in Dune wrote:"YUEH (ya’ē), Wellington (weling- tun), Stdrd 10,082-10,191; medical doctor of the Suk School (grd Stdrd 10,112); md: WannaMarcus, B. G. (Stdrd 10,092-10,186?); chiefly noted as betrayer of Duke Leto Atreides.(Cf: Bibliography, Appendix VII Imperial Conditioning and Betrayal, The.)

—from 'Dictionary of Muad’Dib' by the Princess Irulan"

While there is a question mark next to her death date, the birth at least deserves to be added.
  7. In relation to Lichna's corpse:
Frank Herbert in Dune Messiah wrote:"The body had been discovered several hours earlier by a low-flying courier whose instruments had detected a faint water trace where none should be. His call had brought the experts. And they had learned—what? That this had been a woman of about twenty years, Fremen, addicted to semuta … and she had died here in the crucible of the desert from the effects of a subtle poison of Tleilaxu origin."
So we know she was born in 10,186 because Messiah takes place in 10,206.
  8. In the section on the Tupile Treaty:
Frank Herbert in Dune Messiah wrote:"'We tread with caution,' Paul said. 'Tupile remains the place of sanctuary for defeated Great Houses. It symbolizes a last resort, a final place of safety for all our subjects. Exposing the sanctuary makes it vulnerable.'
'If they can hide people they can hide other things,' Stilgar rumbled. 'An army, perhaps, or the beginnings of melange culture which—'
'You don’t back people into a corner,' Alia said. 'Not if you want them to remain peaceful.' Ruefully, she saw that she’d been drawn into the contention which she’d foreseen.' So we’ve spent ten years of negotiation for nothing,' Irulan said."
Therefore they began the negotiations in 10196.
  9. Frank Herbert in Children of Dune wrote:"They warned me about you,” Sabiha said, and now her shoulders were stiff with readiness.
He heard the fear in her voice, said: “Don’t fear me, Sabiha. You’ve lived eight more years than this flesh of mine. For that, I honor you. But I have untold thousands more years of other lives, far more than you have known. Don’t look upon me as a child. I have bridged the many futures and, in one, saw us entwined in love. You and I, Sabiha.”

Leto II is 9 in this book. Therefore Sabiha is 17. As Children of Dune takes place in 10,217, she was born in 10,200.
  10. This one is extremely minor and unecessary, but...
Frank Herbert in God Emperor of Dune wrote:It required almost a thousand years before the dust of Dune’s old planet-wide desert left the atmosphere to be bound up in soil and water. The wind called sandblaster has not been seen on Arrakis for some twenty-five hundred years. Twenty billion tons of dust could be carried suspended in the wind of just one of those storms. The sky often had a silvery look to it then. Fremen said: “The desert is a surgeon cutting away the skin to expose what’s underneath.” The planet and the people had layers. You could see them. My Sareer is but a weak echo of what was. I must be the sandblaster today.
    —THE STOLEN JOURNALS
God Emperor takes place in 13725, so the sandblaster wind was last seen around 11,220.
  11. Frank Herbert in God Emperor of Dune wrote:“We bought it from smugglers,” Anteac said.
There’ve been no smugglers for almost twenty-five hundred years.
“Waste not, want not,” Anteac said.

    Therefore smuggling ended circa 11230.
  12. Frank Herbert in God Emperor of Dune wrote: Leto knew why the Duncan was coming. Idaho had learned that the Tleilaxu were making another Duncan, another ghola created to the specifications demanded by the God Emperor. This Duncan feared that he was being replaced after almost sixty years of service. It was always something of that nature which began the subversion of the Duncans. A Guild envoy had waited upon Leto earlier to warn that the Ixians had delivered a lasgun to this Duncan.
So the Duncan who attempts to assassinate Leto at the beginning of God Emperor was created around 13,670.
  13. Frank Herbert in God Emperor of Dune wrote:Because of intervening events, the discovery of this private record is now little more than a footnote to history, interesting because it contains one of the earliest references to the God Emperor’s secret journals. For those wishing to explore further into this account, reference may be made to Archive Records, subheadings: Chenoeh, Holy Sister Quintinius Violet: Chenoeh Report, The, and Melange Rejection, Medical Aspects of. (Footnote: Sister Quintinius Violet Chenoeh died in the fifty-third year of her Sisterhood, the cause being
ascribed to melange incompatibility during her attempt to achieve the status of Reverend Mother.)
So, Chenoeh joined the BG in 13,672.

Yeah, according to the Hacks this is the year in which Abulurd was given the stewardship after the death of his father Dmitri, who had it since 10110.

Excellent lore-knowledge and citation-finding, Drunken. I would however make a few cautions:

1. Against taking round figures as exact. For example, it's said that the Harkonnens have been on Arrakis for 80 years. But does this mean 80 years exactly, or just "roughly" 80 years? (Anything from, say, 77 to 83 years.) I think it is more likely the latter. This means that a lot of the calculated dates must be given as "circa."

2. That Frank Herbert's inconsistencies mean that there are necessarily contradictions in any comprehensive timeline. For example, despite Anirul's year of death being given as 10,176, Irulan refers to her as being alive after Duke Leto's death in 10,191 ("It cost more than a billion solaris in spice bribes, so my mother said"). Contradictions also come up with Alia's age and w.r.t. the gap between Dune and Dune Messiah. These contradictions should be noted, and particularly any secondary dates that depend on a disputed date or piece of information.

3. Against neglecting that time passes within each book. Dune Messiah plays out over several months (the whole length of Chani's abbreviated pregnancy), so we cannot say for sure that it takes place within only one particular Standard Year.

I also disagree with your reasoning re: Jessica's training. She didn't start as Mohiam's serving wench at birth. We know Jessica was bought by the Atreides at age ~21 ("She's been with me for sixteen years!"), so the 14 years as serving wench probably refer to age 7–21.
