Thanks Bryan! That link is great...my husband and I argue over the prounaciation of made up words from fiction when ever we try to discuss the works...LoL...
Some never participate. Life happens to them. They get by on little more than dumb persistence and resist with anger or violence all things that might lift them out of resentment-filled illusions of security.

I have to source tapes for these recordings, and in one of them Herbert says the word "secher nbiw." Too bad that one didnt make it to the list here.
Also as a reminder for those of you who dig cool Dune shit, take a look at the Secondary Sources index. Here is the URL:

Re: Dune Pronunciation
I've been listening to the Audio Rennaisance Dune audio book today and just got to the "C.H.". I can't help but chuckle every time they say it.

It's read by Scott Brick, Olagh Cassidy, Euan Morton, Simon Vance and "Cast". I first noted it by Hawat's character but they seem to all pronounce it the same way.SandChigger wrote:Who's the reader on that, and what kind of accent do they have?

They all seem to have a slight English accent.

Re: Dune Pronunciation
Yeah, a lot of people seem to think that Dune characters should have an English/British accent. Especially for the upcoming (and fantasized) movies.
Which makes absolutely no fucking sense, since they don't speak English.

We tend to periodically get distracted arguing about guns and so forth. Nothing new, nothing to worry about. I'm going to re-read Messiah soon so I'm sure I'll have looootttttsss of questions for the people here if that makes you feel better.

Re: Dune Pronunciation
Very helpful. When I first read Dune I assumed FH wanted everything pronounced super exotic, so I mispronounced things for a long while...
Atreides as "A-tray-uh-deez"
Harkonnen as "Hark-un-in" (Which is apparently the right way after all. I switched over to "Hark-cone-in")
And Bene Gesserit as "Bane Jess-er-it"
I'm still surprised that Chani is "Chany" rather than "Chun-eye"

Re: Dune Pronunciation
The spelling of Chani makes no sense whatsoever, given FH's pronunciation of it as "Chay-nee" (to rhyme with "zany").
(And I'll be as grumpy as I please. If I wanted pointless or just plain stupid political "discussion", I'd hang out at FED2K.)

There's intelligent political discussion, and then there's stupid shit that would be better flushed onto a personal blog. Or just flushed, period.

No. But I have heard that 50 is the new 40.
That'll come in handy in a few years.

Re: Dune Pronunciation
Couldn't Chani be pronounced as it is and spelt 'phonetically incorrect' (if that's what its called) because of the natural changes in spelling that occur over time? Or do those changes also incorporate changes to pronunciation? I'm just thinking of things like the change in English of wulf to wolf or Wilhelm to William (second one looks obvious in terms of pronunciation but I know little about Old English pronunciation).

Re: Dune Pronunciation
My wife insist on spelling our daughter's name wrong. Her name is Elizabeth and we call her Ellie (L-E). She spells it Elle. To me that looks like "L".
I guess Elli could be right too, SC, any input?

Re: Dune Pronunciation
Cue Elvis?
Costello, not the fat "arse-bandit".
I'm with you, Freak, on the Elle being "wrong". (However French it may be. ) Elli would work, tho, why not? Even looks kinda modern-trendy, without the usual final "e". Hmmm....
But only if you're his friend. And out hunting birds with him.

That would make Cheney's got a gun! very dangerous.Rakis wrote:How about Cheney...like Dick ?

Well, I guess that's a possibility. Another way of looking at is is that it's only spelled C-H-A-N-I in our alphabet as a convenience to the modern reader. The Fremen speak a form of Arabic (and know Chakobsa and Galach) and who knows how they would write her name (=using what letters and in what way).SadisticCynic wrote:Couldn't Chani be pronounced as it is and spelt 'phonetically incorrect' (if that's what its called) because of the natural changes in spelling that occur over time?
